Located in the Kalahari, the reserve takes its name from the bed of the Gamagara River that runs through it, feeding the roots of the vegetation and veld types. From open grassland to koppies, the land is home to a wide range of indigenous and exotic animals.

Guided Safari Drives

Set out with a ranger to explore the reserve by vehicle, following wildlife tracks across open plains and through denser bush. Game drives can be arranged in the morning or afternoon.

Safari Park

A walking safari through a separate area with non-dangerous species brings the smaller details into focus. A ranger leads the way, reading signs a vehicle would pass straight by.

Sundowner Koppie

Drinks up on the koppie, timed to the last light of the day. A bench and a bar set up to watch the sun settle over the bush.

Dining in the Bush

Tables set out in the reserve, wherever the day takes you. A braai at the Shepherd’s Tree Boma, or lunch beneath the camelthorns.

Safari by Air

From the reserve’s own helipad, rise above the Kalahari and watch the game move far below. Flights take planning, so they’re arranged in advance of your stay.

Wildlife at Gamagara

Conservation is the reserve’s primary focus, through caring for the land and building habitat for a range of species. Giraffe, kudu, oryx and Cape buffalo move across the reserve, and with patience you’ll find the smaller and more elusive species: aardwolf, brown hyena and caracal.
